Children Being Swallowed Up By Those Big Yellow Monsters

Children Being Swallowed Up By Those Big Yellow Monsters

Women have asked me why I support homeschooling because they don’t believe there is any biblical support behind it. Oh, really? God commands fathers to raise their children in the nurture (to educate; to bring or train up) and the admonition (gentle reproof; counseling against a fault; instructions in duties; caution; direction) of the Lord. He commands younger women to be keepers at home and love their children, i.e. be the ones home to love, protect, and raise their children.

The greatest passage in the Bible against public schooling is found in 2 Corinthians 6:14-17: “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

We are also warned that bad company corrupts good morals and we are also commanded to walk with the wise. We are told to teach the Lord’s ways to our children continually. “And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deuteronomy 11:19).

Joel Belz in his article A History of Separation wrote, “My very first exposure to the general truth of that assertion (that splitting up family units has always been a specialty of what we used to call ‘liberal’ political interests, but which many refer to as ‘progressive’) came some 70 years ago when I overheard my father talking with my mother and other folks from our church. ‘There’s just no way,’ I remember Dad’s saying, ‘that we’re going to keep tolerating our children being swallowed up by those big yellow monsters—just to go and be taught an alien gospel.’ Several local public schools were in the process of being consolidated into just one, and for Dad, the big buses that would haul us to a more distant town were grim symbols of a government stripping from parents their God-given rights and duty to shape their own children’s education.”

There’s nothing in the word of God that calls us to ship our children off to strangers five days a week for hours a day for all of their childhood. The purpose of having children is to raise godly offspring (Malachi 2:15) and how will they become godly if they aren’t being raised full time by godly parents? God has been kicked out of the public schools yet Christians all over the place continue to send their precious children, who have soft, teachable hearts and are so impressionable, to be taught the ways of the world.

The peers that your children will be with all day long will have a great influence upon them which is not good either. You all can see the garbage that is on the TV, movies, and the music people are listening to but most parents don’t censor any of this for their precious children. These children will share this worldly garbage with your Christian children. Children in public schools are not being protected from the evil of our culture by their mothers! As culture grows darker, we must be all the more diligent to protect our children from Satan’s influences.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Peter 5:8

  2. It’s a miracle I survived public schools and came out with reason and common sense and a sense of traditional wholesome values instead of radical liberal lunacy, propaganda and an anything goes culture of entitlement and instant gratification! I only have my family to thank for showing me reason, common sense and morals and the fact I could think for myself and not be led to intellectual and moral slaughter like a lamb! I think morality should be left for each family to discuss with their kids, NOT a government run school spouting liberal propaganda of “anything goes” like hook up culture, normalizing divorce, “any family is a real family” lies, transgenderism is valid, be “tolerant” of peoples who hate our values and way of life, etc…etc… As for actual learning, instead of presenting a balanced view of both sides of issues, and fostering intellectual curiosity and critical thinking for oneself, public school fostered conformity and blind obedience above all to whatever propaganda they wanted to indoctrinate! I was always a great student, an academic, intellectual, respectful etc… yet they labeled me as in need of fixing since I didn’t relate socially or intellectually to my thumb-sucking brainwashed peers! I wanted REAL role models, like intelligent and intellectual elders to look up to and learn from, not to wallow in ignorance with the other kids who couldn’t give a you-know-what about learning or bettering themselves! The hurtful memories of rejection by those said adults sting to this day, and make this topic very painful to think about… Maybe I didn’t fit in since I wasn’t another sheep in their brainwashed flock!

  3. we live in a district w/the highest school tax, much affluence, and lots of false pride. many are surpised that we keep our children out of these schools because of the stellar reputation. we observe many families in our neighborhood being worn out by all of the homework and activities required by these schools. but their children are not learning any basics. they are being indoctrinated to accept abnormal things and take tests. their actual common sense and knowledge is very low. keep writing and reaching as many as possible w/the truth.

  4. As a teacher and a Christian who grew up in the public school system I have a lot of thoughts on this subject, too many to fit in the comments here. I am not opposed to homeschooling whatsoever, but want to throw this question out there as food for thought: If you remove all the Christians from public schools, who will be the light in the darkness to those kids? I speak from personal experience when I say that public school as a Christian certainly had its challenges, but I learned to defend my faith and be an example to others and for that I am thankful.

  5. Lori what about Christian schools?! Where they are taught from the KJV Bible? You should not put all schools under one heading and condemn everyone. These Christian teachers do a much better job than i could ever do because i do not have the patience!!

  6. Public schools are only fine if you want to work in the office only one day and hate being at home.

Public schools are only fine if you can ‘con’ enough people into loving you and learn Things fast.

And oh, you better share that knowledge if you are a fast learner with your ‘colleagues’ by telling them the answers and not shouting them out in class or else you receive a beating for being a ‘goody goody’.

I do not remember anything I learnt at school except for the bullying, intimidations and threats I witnessed while there.

The place was a vestige of Satan.

  7. Lol. Pulled our son from public school and put him in christian school. Little did we know. One of his friends who’s dad is a pastor said those exact words and pulled his son from christian school to be a light to the public school. How cute. He got a girl pregnant and drinks heavily. He is now in college and living a very worldly life.

Find in the bible where your children are to be the light unto the world. Lol.

This “christian” school has very liberal feminist teachers and promote feminism with the “pastor” principle.

  8. Who will be the light? Any Christian adult who believes God has called them to it.

Children aren’t equipped, and I would argue cannot be equipped to be “the light.” They haven’t had the time to develop the required Christian maturity [yes, yes, someone will point out this or that teenager but relying on exceptions who are 4 standard deviations above the mean is not a reasonable argument].

  9. Like it or not Christians need to accept the culture war has been lost. The days of hegemony of a Christian worldview in North American culture are over. In our future we are going back to the status of the Church in the Roman Empire pre-Constantine. We have to build institutions for our families and local church communities that can withstand in the evil day, educational institutions especially.

While getting Christian children out of the public school system is not the only thing, it is one of the most important things. This is an extremely urgent matter bearing not only on the child’s spiritual safety, but their physical safety and even their basic education.

The extent to which pastors and other church leadership support private Christian education and homeschooling is a key indicator of how serious they are about equipping the people in their care for the challenges the future holds.

Rather than relitigate the arguments pro-and-con Christian children in the public schools, I’m going to categorically state a proposition:

You cannot place children for 13 years under the tutelage of a system whose foundational worldview is atheistic materialism, whose creation myth is mechanistic Darwinian evolution, whose sacraments are safe sex and abortion on demand, where marriage and family are whatever combination of people seems right to the people involved, where basic biological differences between male and female are denied, and expect that those children’s spiritual condition will not be adversely affected.

This proposition doesn’t even address the fact that in many cases the public school system fails in even its basic mission of graduating minimally literate, numerate young adults.

Families will have to either make a lot of money to afford to send their children to a private school, assuming a suitable one is available. Or, one parent will have to stay at home to homeschool the children.

Churches will have to unlock that building that sits empty for six days a week, get involved in supporting Christian schools, and pass up buying that new espresso machine for the coffee bar to help moderate the cost of tuition. Churches will have to stop treating homeschooling like some kind of bizarre hobby for a few weird families who can afford for one parent to stay at home and not work outside the home.

Christians who do not have school age children will have to dig in and help families who do with the financial end of their child’s education either directly gifting the parents, or by contributing to the school [OUCH! Just left off preaching and got started meddling].

Educating children in a private school or at home is of course not a guarantee that they will grow up to be Christians. You can only do what you can do, at some point it is up to them. God calls us to do what he’s called us to do, the results are in his hands. Ultimately it’s up to you to decide if God is really calling you to get your children out of the public schools. Just like it was up to Lot to decide if God was really calling him to get his family out of Sodom. Pro-tip: don’t look back.

  10. One thing i cant stand is when parents say they wouldnt have the patience or smarts to homeschool. Firstly, we homeschool because we dont have patience. Because we recognise the only way to get patience is to have it tested. And secondly, if you can read and write, you can teach your child the same. You only need to be one step ahead to teach. Both of the above reasons are weak and just an excuse to not do your duty.

  11. Think of it this way. Do you send your 2 year old son out to mow the back yard? Why not? Because he is not yet equipped to do the job. Do you send your 7 year old daughter to be married? Why not? Because she is not yet equipped to meet the demands of being a wife.

Children must FIRST be brought up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) and become properly equipped before they can become “salt and light” to a fallen world.

I am constantly amazed when parents think that they can throw their children into a huge community cesspool for 8 hours a day and somehow expect that when they come home they won’t be covered (head to toe) in excrement.

  12. My experience with private “so called” Christian schools is that often, the worst of the public school children end up in the private schools because they got kicked out of the public schools and the private schools will not turn them away for one reason ($$$) or another.

Then you have the worst of the worst of the “bad company” to corrupt your child’s good morals. Not only does the Bible tell us that bad company corrupts good morals, (1 Corinthians 15:33) it also tells us that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. (Galatians 5:9) It only takes one bad apple to ruin the whole barrel. It only takes one juvenile delinquent to ruin a whole school.

  13. Hi Jenna,
I wanted to comment that I don’t think Lori is condemning anyone, she is just encouraging us mothers to do God’s will and follow His word! I perceive this is out of love for us and not in any way in condemnation. If you are a frequent reader of Lori’s it is obvious she does not write anything to condemn, as she understands that is only the Lord’s job. However it IS her job (and anyone who professes to be Christian) to admonish in gentleness and love, and encourage others to follow Christ Jesus and study His gospel! Please look through her posts for yourself and consider it.

As for having the patience to homeschool our children, I completely understand what you mean. When my daughter was school-age, my husband wanted me to homeschool, and I initially fought it because I didn’t feel suited for it – in patience, knowledge, or even desire! I finally relented (after a few months of her in public preschool), and tried keeping her home, as I truly felt that this was what God wanted me to do. As usual, when God wants something of me it’s usually the more difficult and narrow road, especially in the beginning. I felt very overwhelmed by all the responsibilities, and had my doubts surface time and again, but something always came up that confirmed the path. We are now starting our 3rd year together and I am actually looking forward to it, as we begin a new curriculum which is more self-study based for my 8-yr old and allows me much more time to focus on basics with my 3-yr old and take care of things around the house, all with the peace-of-mind I know exactly what my young daughter is learning and being exposed to, and that she is safe and accounted for by me.

Everyone’s path is different, but please don’t sell yourself short, especially when it comes to your children. What someone wrote about staying one step ahead in school I find true for me. I encourage you to pray over these issues that are coming into your life and consider why you are drawn to reading/responding to it. Perhaps God is trying to show you something.

    Blessings to you and yours!
