Getting Out of the Rat Race

Getting Out of the Rat Race

A Christian woman who has three children and a blog had some very exciting news to share about a friend of hers who is going to do an online course about “Mothers Being Stretched Too Thin.” She describes her friend’s life:

“Susan is a mom of three who works a full time job outside the home as well as writes books, speaks, runs a successful blog and is super crafty.  I’m always wondering how on earth she does it.  She has gathered some friends and they have created an awesome four part video series for you to watch that I think you will love.”

She is going to teach women how to overcome the exhaustion and hustle and thrive as a working mother. Can you even imagine what she can teach them that would help them to be more productive and efficient in their lives? I do and I wish I was Susan and could teach this online class. I would tell the mothers:

“I am going to quit my full time job and if you are able, you should too. My husband and I have decided to downside and buy a home where we can live on his income. I am going to learn how to live as simply as I can within his income even if this means growing my own garden and staying home most of the time. Hey, I will even get rid of my smart phone if I have to! I have made the decision that being home full time to be with my children and be there whenever they need me is more important than my career.

I am going to put off writing books until my children are all grown up and out of the house. I won’t be speaking anymore either since I need to be home to take care of my husband, children, and home. They need me a lot more than anyone else does and I am going to make them my priority from now on. I want to make sure my children have the best chance of growing up emotionally stable and secure. Unfortunately, I am also going to close down my blog for a while and just focus on those things that love me back (my family) and mean more to me than anything else in this world.

No one can take place of being a wife to my husband and a mother to my children. Anyone can take my place in my career. There are many book writers, speakers, successful blogs, and Pinterest is a great place to find crafty ideas. My family needs me a lot more than any of these.  I will teach my children to do crafts with me since this will be something special we can do.

So for now, women, I am going to have to say good bye to my career and social media for a time, a special time, to focus upon that which matters most to me and begin to store my treasures in heaven. I hope and pray many of you will do the same if possible. Life is fleeting. Our children grow up quickly. I want to be with them, spend time with them, and teach them all there is to know about the Lord and His ways. I hope you will join me by getting out of the rat face and going home, for this is God’s will for you. Blessings!”

I am sure this would be a very popular online course and hundreds of women would flock to hear her say these things, don’t you think?

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house,
give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

  1. This is good Biblical counsel. When the Lord has transformed the mind, the heart rejoices upon hearing truth. I’d like almost nothing better than to get out of the rat race.

  2. “Anyone can take my place in my career.”
    Oh, this is so true!
But women think they are so important and can’t be replaced. They need the strokes and praise from others, that they are not getting at home because they are WORKING!
I say, quit and find out how fast you are replaced.
You might even find your husband’s love, if you take your eyes off yourself and onto your husband and family.
    I know, because I did!

  3. They have no clue how much they are missing out on, Christine. They have believed the lies of our culture who is listening to the enemy and have missed out on so much in life with their husband and children since pleasing their boss must come first. It’s so sad.

  4. Wow. I don’t think it is possible to overestimate just how much this post spoke to me this morning. I am shaking.
I am a wife, and a mum of 4 beautiful, incredible kids. I work part-time (in the shop that my husband and myself own, and at a cleaning job when my kids are at school/kindy, and one evening a week when my husband is at home to care for the kids). I am also a writer, and have just had my 7th book published last weekend.
The sheer amount of time I waste on social media (I call it “promoting” but it isn’t – it’s wasting time), updating my blog, and promoting other authors work (so they in turn, promote mine) is astonishing.
I am always tired and grumpy, because I am so busy I stay up far too late at night, then have to get up early in the morning for the kids. I am lucky to get 6 hours sleep a night, and I am a person who needs a lot of sleep.
I love doing crafts, but I don’t have the time to do them at the moment, and haven’t for a long time. My kids also love doing crafts, but I haven’t had the time to do crafts with them for so long. I don’t have time to do very much with my children at all, actually.
I have high hopes for a vegie patch, but so far, that hasn’t happened as much as I would like.
I want to bake more for my kids, instead of feeding them packaged snacks, but I don’t have the time.
My house is clean, the laundry done, and nourishing meals cooked every night, but that is about my limit.
I am sure that this post was written just for me, and it is certainly a warning.
Thank you Lori. Please, if you have time, pray for me, that I will be able to make the necessary changes to be the wife and mother that the Lord wants me to be.

  5. I guess it was written for you, KK, and all the other women out there like you! Your family needs and wants you. All the rest of the things you are involved in don’t matter if you lose the souls of your children. Begin putting all of your time and energy into your husband, children, and home. Your family will thank you!

Blessings! Oh, and remember, with God all things are possible.

  6. Lady Virtue,

Prayers to God for you from me, too. Your comment put a lump in my throat. I imagined you as my own daughter (because you are someone’s precious girl) and how I would pray on your behalf.

    *hugs*
    Kelley~

  7. Prayers for those who want to be home… The sacrifice is so worth it and the children’s childhood seems to go by in a fleeting moment..
Thank you for this truth Lori!

  8. Love this line: “No one can take place of being a wife to my husband and a mother to my children. Anyone can take my place in my career.”

If anyone NEEDS two incomes it’s us! But I have left my career as a teacher to raise my little one (and one on the way! – we also desire to adopt an orphan) I started to babysit consistently to bring in extra income. My heart would not let me put my little child into daycare for someone else to raise. God does not mince words in His Word….woman are to be keepers of their homes and men are to be out providing. My marriage is doing better as well.

  9. Beautiful comment! So refreshing and honest. Why would work and ministry even matter if our kids are grown and look back and remember a grumpy mom. Not sure how old your children are but I have one teen and am doing damage control with him now. I was a working, tired, grumpy mom for many of his formative years 🙁
