The Home is the Nursery of a Nation

Written by Darrow Miller in Above Rubies Magazine

One thing a woman is especially designed to do is nurture the next generation. Woman, in the very fiber of her being, was made to nurture.

In our modern materialistic culture, things are more important than relationships. The woman’s ability to nurse and nurture a child has very little cachet. As a result, families are dissolving. Children may be provided with things but know little of a mother’s nurture. We are reaping the harvest of growing depression in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Those never nurtured by a maternal heart seek identity and escape in drugs, alcohol, recreational sex, and extreme, death defying sports.

Motherhood is beautiful, wonderful, and vital to the health of families, children, and the future of a stable and flourishing nation. No amount of cold, hard, plastic toys will replace the warm, human touch of a mother. No amount of staring into a screen will replace the loving gaze of a mother’s eyes. No amount of material things will replace the art of “being there.” Our children, communities, and nations are starving for the presence of the maternal, nurturing heart.

Modern feminism rooted in materialistic culture says that a woman’s worth is found in the marketplace rather than the domestic space, in producing money and things rather than raising healthy children. A sexist culture promotes the lie that the male is superior  to the female. Women seek fulfillment in being like a man. In both sexist and modern feminist culture, maleness is the hyper value.

An unknown author has stated, “Our generation is becoming so busy trying to prove that women can do what men can do that women are losing their uniqueness. Women weren’t created to do everything a man can do. Women were created to do everything a man can’t do.”

It is the mother’s nurturing nature, her being there, more than virtually anything else, that contributes to the mental, physical, and moral health of her children, which health is a predictor of the moral health of the marketplace and the public square. Indeed, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

Let us restore, as a people and a culture, the wonder and beauty of the feminine and female. Let us restore the glory of the maternal heart to a central place in our culture. Let’s celebrate being there, placing children, rather than things at the center of our lives. After all, the home is the nursery of a nation.

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
Psalm 127:3-5

  1. Beautifully written and something that has escaped our collective knowledge. All of Hollywood (the Teacher of our nation) promotes the masculinity of women. They show women superhero’s saving the day. They have girls in movies going on quests and acting masculine. All these things and expectations that are impossible for a woman to do well and leads to frustration due to unmet expectations in life.

On the other side of that same coin no one is giving the picture of what true feminist is except you and a few others. So girls don’t even know what they can succeed at and where they are vital.

On a side note. As women we should denounce men like Tyler Perry and all drag queens for making a mockery of real femininity. They have turned our noble calling into a 2 dimensional cartoon. They are modern day minstrels (the white men who would dress as black men and make a caricature out of them). They should be called out by all women and Godly men and not tolerated.

  2. Wholeheartedly agree. The best amongst so many wonderful writings.

NURTURE. A very important word to discuss with girls and young women. Daycare can provide children with a watchful eye, toys to play with or hands to place them in a high chair and give them food but there is no NURTURING going on there.

  3. My mother was the daughter of a woman who placed no value on her daughters. My mother placed no value on me.

God only knows how long this insidious pattern had been passed down from generation to generation. It ended with me

  4. I agree, I’ve never understood why feminist women would support drag queens. They sexualize and degrade women FAR more than any heterosexual play boy. They mock women with their flamboyant actions, fake high pitched voices, and their pounds of makeup. Women act nothing like that! And therein is the hypocrisy of political correctness; if a white man were to paint his face black and wear gold chains, he would be immediately and mercilessly shamed and forced to publicly apologise, but if a man wants to put on a wig and a dress and wear extra stuffing in his bra he is to be supported, celebrated, and any form of criticism is deemed bigoted and hateful. I ssupport women, therefore I think drag queens are disgusting.

  5. Mara,
It’s like you took the words right out of my mouth. I can’t tell you how many times when my hubby and I are talking that I share how disgusted I am with the way these men try to fake being women. We (real women) act nothing like that stuff they be doing. It’s like they’ve created a whole other “new” gender.
