Truly Powerful Women Have Calm Spirits

Truly Powerful Women Have Calm Spirits

“The most powerful women I’ve met in life did NOT have a contentious spirit. A peaceful, calm spirit (Galatians 5:22-24) gives a believing woman tremendous influence in Western Civilization. If you can cause/create MORE dissension and contentiousness among women, you can wreck the greatest civilization in human history in a couple generations! THAT’s whats going on. A godly woman has a contented Spirit. Why is she content? Because she submits to God and His precepts. A contentious woman ignores or purposely violates God’s precepts.” (Comment by Stuart K. from a recent post)

Christianity teaches women to have meek and quiet spirits. Feminism teaches women to have contentious and loud spirits. These are two opposing world views and most women, even Christian women, seem to have eaten the forbidden fruit of feminism. Churches certainly aren’t teaching women the ways of biblical womanhood, while culture teaches them how to be feminists.

Godly women are led by the Truths found in God’s Word. Feminists are led by their feelings and emotions. Godly women trust in God to perform what He has promised, so they rest in Him and are content in what He has called them to do. Feminists trust in their own abilities and what they want (and what they have been told to want by culture), so they will do whatever it takes to accomplish their “dreams and goals” apart from God’s will.

How do we learn to have meek and quiet spirits when everything around us screams that we should be the opposite? Let God’s Word dwell in you richly. Read a few chapters a day. Obey what God has told you to do. Look how God commands women to win disobedient husbands. Does He command they argue, quarrel, and demand their husbands shape up? No, He commands that these wives live in submission to their husbands without the word and with godly behavior with meek and quiet spirits.

What did godly women of old adorn themselves with? Preaching in the pulpits and leading women in social justice movements? NO! They adorned themselves with meek and quiet spirits while living in submission to their husbands.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
1 Peter 3:5,6

  1. Contentious and loud women are repulsive. But a woman who is calm and confident in her Saviour is like a magnet. As the saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar!
    Wonderful post!

  2. I’m so glad you responded to this comment. I had written a response to it yesterday but deleted it. This is something I’ve always struggled with. One elder called me a “crusader” because he recognized that I always piped up when I saw a perceived injustice (not during services of course as all the women remain silent in our fellowship).

When I was first married I was so used to “debating” having been brought up in public institutions that I didn’t even recognize it as arguing. It took years for me to see that (thanks to my husband and you).

I still find myself in contention with others at times. Online media like this blog, you’ll find me defending what I believe are God’s ways. When politics come up I’ll often speak up online or in real life I’ll speak up knowing that there will be disagreement. When my father tries to impose his ways on me and my children (not sinful) I’ll buck at them. I really struggle with having a quiet spirit. Part of that is I don’t have an inborn aversion to conflict coupled with the fact that I’m naturally outgoing. Most importantly , I don’t have a clear idea what is okay and not, when it’s okay to speak and when it’s not.

When do you speak up and when do you remain silent? I’ve always wanted to be one of those dear Christian girls/women who are really sweet without ever saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. I suppose I broke that gauge so long ago and not figured out how to fix it. What are some personal guidelines you use?

  3. Speak the truth in love. Yes, speak truth when you hear lies and fallacies but then let it go. We are only responsible for planting seeds of truth, NOT making sure everyone agrees with us. For example, on my recent post about vaccinations, women were SO vehement and become angry about this topic. I am a much stronger supporter of marriage than I am against vaccinations. Yes, I am completely against vaccinations and have given my reasons but we must learn to state our opinions without ever becoming mean or harsh as many do. Many women will begin to slander their opponent and resort to name calling instead of trying to reason facts and truth with them. “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth” (2 Tim. 2:24,25).

  4. Hi there Lori, I can’t find this on your FB page like I could before – has something gone wrong? I hope not!
I hope all is well with you and yours – good post as well.
    Love & Blessings.

  5. Are women really not allowed to even ask a question in Church? I know preaching is forbidden in the Christian religion but I didn’t know it was that extreme as to absolute silence.

  6. Thank you Lori, I think it was a problem with my laptop because it is all back to normal now! How are your beautiful Grandbabies doing?
    ???

  7. Once again M you have said exactly what I was thinking, but if you hadn’t written it first then I would never have been brave enough to.
I love to argue. I was on the school debating team and wanted to be a lawyer. I didn’t pursue that career because my father told me it wasn’t a suitable profession for a Christian lady.
I enjoy a good, robust discussion, the livelier the better.
However, my husband is not the type of man who likes debates or arguments or contentions and that is my biggest struggle – especially because battling addictions means he isn’t always entirety rational.
I have to pray so much that the Lord will help me to be meek and quiet because it’s not in my nature. I actually wrote something in the front of my Bible that one of our preachers said: “You might have been born that way but you weren’t born again that way.”
Satan uses our human nature against us and he’s so good at it.

  8. Interesting! I’m doing a sociology project on similarities between Islam and Christianity and I’m surprised more and more at the parallels between them.

  9. Dear Lori and Friends, “meek and quiet,” a serious and ongoing challenge for any woman who happened to be born with both a brain and a spine.

  10. Thank you for this post. I have just read Titus 2 and this goes right along with it. Actually, after reading Titus, I had an outburst with my husband. The devil was working on me quickly! I’ll keep reading & immersing myself in God’s Word.

  11. I have noticed, the more quiet I get, both in voice tone and in giving opinions, how loud some women are and how unattractive it is. Loud women dominating the conversation, interrupting others, yelling, arguing, cursing, coarse jesting and nagging…it is ugly. Even beautiful women become unattractive when they are loud and obnoxious. However, even a plain woman, who smiles sweetly and is quiet and gentle becomes so beautiful and attractive. As I am learning to be quiet and gentle (2 traits that don’t come naturally to me), I am becoming more aware of the Biblical truth of a quiet and gentle spirit being an “unfading beauty” and how they apply to all women; old and young, pretty and plain. For all the effort and money the women of our culture put into looking younger and more beautiful, it is a waste if that woman is loud, harsh, and vulgar.

  12. Yes they should be silent during service, only the men should be speaking. If she needs to go to the restroom she can whisper to her husband or if she needs to shush the kids she can. If a woman is married she needs to ask her husband at home, if she isn’t married she can ask her father, an elder, or the pastor after church.

  13. Strong,independent,fierce,dominate
Are all the signs of a “perfect” woman
    by the world’s standards
    But….
    Submissive,gentle,loving,God fearing
are all the signs of a “perfect” woman
    by God’s standards
The world’s woman HAS to have a career,HAS to be single, DETESTS pregnancy and children
    But…
God’s woman cares for her home, marries as soon as God puts the right man in her path, and loves being a mother to a “quiverful” of her husband’s children
The world’s woman is determined to spend her life doing something she isn’t meant to be
    But….
God’s woman wants to spend her life as what God has created her to be
The world’s woman dies alone, regretting her wasted life and no one remembering what she did or why she did it
    But….
God’s woman dies with her children and grandchildren gathered around her bed, smiling in satisfaction at her “Job Well Done” and the world impacted by what she did in the home for all those so called “wasted years”
They both chose and they both lived their choices
    But…
The difference is in the outcome
What ending do you want to be yours?

  14. Sadly, many men, including deluded Christian men, foster the loud, contentious, rebellious spirit in women. I have known more than a few of my fellow men who have expressed disdain for women of quite and gentle spirit, preferring the “loud, strong, independent” type. Incredibly, many of these same men who went on to marriy such women then also complained of miserable, strife-filled marriages, unable to see the cause and effect at work. It’s heartbreaking, but an unfortunate sign of just how far fallen and perverse our world has become, that so many men call beauty ugliness and ugliness beauty.
