Godly Women are Quiet Women

Godly Women are Quiet Women

Our culture is noisy. Social media and culture are noisy. How are we, as Christian woman, supposed to live according to God’s Word? We are to be quiet.

First, let’s look at how worldly women are. “She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house” (Proverbs 7:11). Here, God is referring to a harlot, a worldly woman. She is loud and wants to be heard by the way she dresses and speaks. She is stubborn and wants her way. She won’t listen to Truth. She wants her ears tickled instead. Godly women aren’t loud. They don’t seek attention, and they’re teachable to God’s will.

“It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house” (Proverbs 21:9). This verse refers to wives. Brawling is the act of quarreling. Godly women don’t quarrel. They seek peace with all men, especially their husbands.

“It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman” (Proverbs 21:19). Contentious means quarrelsome. Godly women aren’t quarrelsome. They don’t demand their way. They aren’t angry because their hope and trust is in Jesus Christ who has cleansed them of their sin so they have peace with God and others.

How are godly wives commanded to win their disobedient husbands? “Without the word…” (1 Peter 3:1). God wants godly women to use their loving and godly behavior to win their husbands, not preaching at them and trying to control and change them.

How are godly women to behave in the churches? “Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” (1 Timothy 2:11,12) “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.” (1 Corinthians 14:33,34) Godly women are silent in the churches. They have no desire to preach, teach, lead, nor speak in the church gatherings.

How does Ellicot’s Commentary interpret 1 Timothy 2:9 concerning the command for godly women to “adorn themselves in modest apparel”? “This direction to Christian women’s… place in public worship was one of quiet attention—that their reverence and adoration must be shown not by thrusting themselves forward with a view to public teaching or public praying, but by being present and taking part silently—avoiding especially in these services anything like a conspicuous dress or showy ornaments—anything, in fact, which would be likely to arouse attention, or distract the thoughts of others.” Godly women are not only quiet with their mouths in church gatherings but with the way they clothe and adorn themselves. They don’t dress to attract the attention of others.

Does quiet mean we can never speak? During the church gathering, yes, but everywhere else, no. We can definitely speak in our homes to our children, husband, and guests, but we are to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Just remember to “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6). “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness” (Proverbs 31:26). In order to speak words of wisdom and kindness, you must let God’s Word dwell within you richly. It’s His Word and Spirit alone that transforms you into the godly women that God has asked you to become.

I can tell you, women, it’s a lot easier being quiet in our homes where God wants us to be, not as a politician or traveling around speaking and preaching or even being in the workforce, but quietly serving and loving our families and those God puts into our lives. I’ve even made it my goal to not publish so often on social media but learn to be more quiet in this area that tries so hard to steal our time away from those who truly matter in our lives.

Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10

  1. I really struggle, by nature I’m a talker. And with 6 kids in the house who are also talkers it’s even harder. I also find it difficult when my husband gets something wrong about my motives and i automatically correct him, get upset or, roll my eyes. For example I’ll inform him of a problem or calmly ask him a question. And I am honestly feeling fine and he accuses me of having an attitude. When I honestly don’t feel I’m having an attitude at all and I don’t know why he would think that. So I try and reframe it and I get the same response. I eventually give up, till my eyes and walk off. Frustrated at his response. Then he gets upset that I won’t ask him the question. I feel like I cant win sometimes. 🤷 Or, I’ll ask him to explain something further as I don’t understand and he refuses. But demands I just do it anyway and wonders why I get upset. I just don’t know how I’m expected to respond. He’s a highly intelligent man and is otherwise a good husband. I just feel at a loss when things get prickly. Do I say nothing?

Hi M, I encourage you to read Trey’s comment on my post “Living Like an Abigail.” Stop correcting him, getting upset with him, and rolling your eyes. You aren’t being submissive and respectful to him when you do these things. Remember, you can do all things (everything God commands of you) through Christ who strengthens you!

  2. We had a missionary family from Japan at our church this weekend. It was lovely! They have 5 children ages 11 to 14 months. While their father was up giving his presentation/teaching, the mother was taking care of the children. When the youngest was fussy, mom took him to the back, and the rest of the children sat quietly!! It was a testament to their parenting. She was a kind, quiet and gentle lady.

Yes, RMR, they are a beauty to behold!

  3. In my experience, merely dressing decently/traditionally in the current society is odd enough to be ‘drawing attention to oneself.’ What are your thoughts?

Hi Jo, We obey God regardless of how we are seen by others. If we’re drawing attention to ourselves due to obedience to God, this is a good thing! We are being salt and light as God commands.
