She Excels Them All
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Proverbs 31:29
Why does this woman excel all of the other women who have lived virtuously? What makes her so amazingly special? I believe it is because she has given her life for others. She learned from an early age to deny herself and that the greatest of all is the servant of all. She most likely also knew that godliness with contentment is great gain. Her main ministry was to her family and those around her. She understood that by giving her life away, she would gain life. She didn’t worry about being appreciated or fighting for her rights, but only in living to please the Lord in all that she did.
“We may regard it as a representation of the truly Christian matron, who loves husband and children, guides the house, is discreet, chaste, good, a teacher of good things.” (Pulpit Commentary) Yes, Titus 2:4, 5 is a perfect description of what God wants from women. He wants them to be a husband lover of their husband, and a children lover of their children, including willingly bearing and raising godly offspring for Him. He wants them to know that their home is their God-ordained workplace and they are to guard it from all evil influences. They are called to build their homes up in holiness, in godliness, and in purity. Everyone who enters their home should see Jesus in them.
They are to be discreet with meek and quiet spirits, not doing unfeminine things to draw attention to themselves but shamefaced instead. They lives lives that are chaste in language and in behavior. They are careful with what they fill their minds with because they know that their thoughts become their actions. They dwell on the true, lovely, and the honest. They love goodness and decency. They understand the ugliness and destructive nature of sin so they avoid it at all costs. They clearly understand that they can only be godly women because of Christ’s finished work on the cross for them and His Spirit working mightily within them; for they are complete in Him (Colossians 2:10) and no longer broken.
“But thou excellest them all; in real beauty, in true riches, in purity of doctrine, in simplicity of worship, in holiness of life and conversation, in undefiled religion, in doing good works, properly so called.” (Gill’s Exposition) Christ is who godly women worship. Christ is who they want to please above all. They don’t care if they don’t fit into their culture and its fashion or even in their church, because His Word has the final say in their life. Truth never offends them because they have soft, teachable hearts. They allow truth to guide them and not their emotions and feelings. They carefully study the Word of God so they can easily discern false teachings and choose to walk in the path of righteousness. They teach these things diligently to their children.
These are the reason these women excel them all. They take God at His Word, believe Him, and obey Him.
