Studies have proven that I was right! I guess I should say that God is right. Remember that post on housework of mine that went viral because so many women can’t fathom doing all of the housework? Some who commented on it even said they wouldn’t marry a man unless he helped with housework! Well, a new study found something very interesting. “They found that women who clean, hoover and do the laundry are likely to live almost three years longer. But men can breathe a sigh of relief – housework appears to have little effect on them. They are better off in the garden, according to research by Dutch academics.”

“The team from University Medical Centre Rotterdam found that a 55-year-old woman who does little around the house is likely to live to see her 83rd birthday – but that those who keep on top of the housework should live on to the age of 86.” Okay, I have to admit, as soon as I read this, I spent an hour doing housework! The reason I believe this study is because whatever God commands of us is for our good. He wants women to get married, bear children, and be keepers at home. We are the ones called to guide our homes and look well to the ways of our household (Proverbs 31:27).

Plus, studies have also “found that men who do more traditionally ‘feminine’ chores have less sex…What we do in the house is really strongly tied to how people think of themselves as men or women or as masculine or feminine,’ he told Live Science.” God created male and female and He gave them different roles from the time sin entered into the world a long time ago. Women would have pain in childbirth (bear and raise children – Genesis 3:16) and men would work the soil (provide for the family – Genesis 3:17). No matter how our progressive society tries to tell us otherwise, it will never be better than God’s intended ways for us.

We all know that exercise and moving are better for us than sitting around all day. The results of this study should be the motivation women need to start doing their housework! Men are stronger than women so housework probably doesn’t do a lot for them. They need the heavy lifting and harder work to stay healthy. My next door neighbor is in his yard a lot. He loves doing yard work and he’s good at it. When he was a bit younger and stronger, they had the best looking yard on the block from his hard work. His wife fixes the meals, shops, and keeps her home spotless. She does this happily for her husband. It’s good and healthy to move!

Being angry and upset with their husband for not helping around the house makes women miserable since the JOY of the LORD is their strength. As I said in my viral post, it is better to do your housework cheerfully unto the Lord rather than be a quarreling and complaining wife who makes her husband miserable with her expectations and demands.

She looks well to the ways of her household,
and eats not the bread of idleness.

Proverbs 31:27

  1. Lori, what is your answer for women who have severe back pain? Any bending over while cleaning, or even standing on my feet cooking causes a lot of pain. My desire is still there, but I give up because it hurts so much. No, I don’t take any prescriptions for my back.

  2. Have you ever tried icing it all day long until it is better, Janet? I buy packs of frozen corn from Trader Joes and put them on the spot on my back where it is in spasm and keep exchanging it for a fresh one throughout the day. Ice is great for inflammation and pain. It’s the only thing that heals my back. (I just hurt it two weeks ago but within 3 days, it was much better but I still have to ice it anytime it begins to hurt again.)

  3. The above comment reminds me of the days where I could stand (or sit!) for more than five minutes at a time before the severe pain set in. Talk about discouraging! I have tried lots of things and am not one to take medication and I have found that the only thing that has helped has been thereaputic massages (weekly for now but it depends on your condition and yes there is a huge difference between massage types) coupled with of course daily stretching and light strength building excercises and making sure to stay well hydrated and eat loads of fruits and vegetables. It’s so simple and crazy to some but the results speak for itself because I can actually do normal things again! I will say though, ironing still makes my back hurt for some reason so I was thrilled to actually get the clothes out of the dryer in time yesterday and not have to iron them ? Blessings and prayers as you go on your journey!

  4. Great article, you summed it up very well. I’ve been married 30 years and we have 10 kids. I’d like to add that good food and great sex cover a multitude of domestic shortcomings?
