Are You a Handmaid For the Lord?
An angel of the Lord came to Mary and told her she was going to conceive a child by God Almighty and her child was going to be the Son of God.
This was Mary’s reply, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word. And the angel departed from her” (Luke 1:38).
Barnes’ Notes on the Bible Commentary wrote this about this verse: “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid … – This was an expression of resignation to the will of God, and of faith in the promise. To be the ‘handmaid of the Lord’ is to be submissive and obedient, and is the same as saying, ‘I fully credit all that is said, and am perfectly ready to obey all the commands of the Lord.'”
Are you committed and resigned to the will of God? Do you trust that His ways are good, and acceptable, and perfect? Do you understand that His ways are higher than your ways even when you don’t understand them? Are you submissive and obedient to Him? Are you perfectly ready to obey all of the commands of the Lord? If so, then you are a handmaid for the Lord.
Do you strive to be sober, a lover of your husband and children, good, chaste, discreet, obedient to your husband, and a keeper at home? Do you want to have a meek and quiet spirit and adorn yourself with submission to your husband? Do you want to be a virtuous woman who looks well to the ways of her household? Do you want to be modest and shamefaced, not wishing to cause undue attention to yourself? Do you understand that God’s purpose for women being quiet in the churches doesn’t mean that God thinks less of women but that this is His perfect order for the churches? If you are single, do you strive to be holy in body and spirit? If so, you are a handmaid for the Lord.
There’s a movie called The Handmaid’s Tale. This is a wicked and twisted movie. It’s about those in authority who are cruel and forcing young women to be submissive to their evil will. (No, I have never seen it but I read what it was about.) This has nothing whatsoever to do with willingly choosing to be a handmaid for the loving Lord, the Creator of the universe, the One who sent His only begotten Son to die for you so you could be free from sin and God’s wrath. The world and Satan love to twist what is good into something that is wicked and ugly.
God’s will is perfect and never evil. We are His children and we follow Him. We know that what He has to offer is far superior to what this world has to offer and we praise and thank Him for it.
All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
Psalm 25:10

Thank you Lori. The Lord is teaching me daily to be a handmaid for Him though I tend to fail miserably at times. I’ve never seen Handmaidens Tale but have seen the ads and online images. No thank you but I won’t be watching that trash ever!
Amen Regina!
Such a great post. I am single, so I’m glad you mentioned that in your posts about us being handmaidens too.
I absolutely love your you tube videos! I recently watched the one on wearing feminine clothes. I am in the process of simplifying, decluttering and organizing and I realized how many clothes I have! It’s really quite embarrassing. Do you think you could do a video about your wardrobe and what your thoughts are, as far as how many shirts, sweaters, shoes, accessories, etc you think is a good number to have? I know you mentioned having four dresses. I know different climates will affect what different people own and wear. But I’d like a starting point to go by and would love to see what you have in your wardrobe! I hope to be married someday and want to get better organized now.
Thanks so much!!
You have an awesome Christian blog with great content. Keep up the good work!
Reading through all of your blogs, I am very happy that you only allow positive posts! Well done.
The book, film and TV Handmaids Tail are all written by feminists and are very deliberately intended to discredit Biblical Womanhood and the traditional family.
I will try to do that, Lesley! I am always looking for good ideas.
Lori, I’ve found your blog today through Pinterest and I see that I’ll probably read dozens of your posts. I write this comment to tell you that your message is important, it’s a treasure.
Maybe your thoughts are for a small part of all women (many believe and want to live according to schemes where man and woman are equal in everything). But there are women who would like to live similar to what you describe here and they’re looking for your words with all their hearts, hoping to find like-minded women and families…
I’m writing it as a stay-at-home mom from Poland, Europe. When people hear that my 4-year-old Son doesn’t go to kindergarten, they think I’m lazy, or with no ambition, or just very, very weird. No understanding. I can find very few people who would understand and support my decision. Thankfully, my Husband sees the benefits of the situation that his kids are with mom.
Lori, I want you to know that your words are Treasures. Keep on talking to us 🙂
Thank you, Ula. We will always be a remnant but as long as we live our lives based upon the Word of God, we will be doing the good and right thing even if no one else is. May the Lord bless you as you live to please Him!
Mary was very brave. It would have been so easy for her to say “No Lord, choose someone else” but she didn’t. What a woman!
