We Must Stop Being Legalistic
On my Instagram stories last week, I had a question and answer time. I let women ask me anything. One woman asked me about post-partum depression. I answered that I believe a lot of it is due to lack of sleep. This is why we sleep trained our children as young babies. We used the cry-it-out method. Some women scolded me. They also scolded me for other things I said were okay, such as circumcising one’s son, drinking a little bit of alcohol, spanking children, celebrating Christmas and Easter, and not co-sleeping with one’s babies. Throughout the years, I have been scolded for many things, as you can imagine. There’s also the women wearing pants issue and birth control issue. If I have mentioned NFP, women scold me about this.
Women, you have freedom to have any convictions that you want, but if they can’t be backed up with Scripture, you have no right to scold others nor tell them that they are sinning. This is becoming legalistic. Cults have man-made rules that they force upon their followers. The Pharisees were known for adding on to the Law and making up their own rules. This is legalism. Don’t have anything to do with it.
It’s okay to sleep train your babies. Crying never harmed anyone. If you don’t want to do this, then don’t! It’s okay to not co-sleep with your babies. We never did! It’s not mandated in Scripture. Spanking one’s children seems to clearly be backed up by Scripture in multiple verses in Proverbs, but I can’t say that it’s a sin for parents to not spank. It’s not crying-it-out and spanking one’s children that is causing children to grow up to be emotionally unstable and insecure. It’s not having mothers home full time with them and not having fathers present in their lives that is causing this harm to children.
The Bible never commands us to never drink alcohol. I wish it did, since it causes so much destruction. It sure does warn us about alcohol in numerous verses, however. God does command that we remain sober at all times, so this needs to be kept in mind if one wants to drink. Circumcising one’s son is a decision between a husband and his wife. God never condemns this practice. There may even be health reasons for doing so depending upon what you read.
We celebrate Christmas and Easter. Yes, I have heard all of the reasons why we shouldn’t, but we are celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth and resurrection; the two greatest events in the history of this world! We LOVE celebrating these holidays, and it’s not condemned in God’s Word (Romans 14:6). Someone asked me about celebrating the OT feasts and Passover. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong to do, but they all pointed to the coming of Jesus Christ. He has come!
Then there’s the issue of women only wearing dresses. God doesn’t tell us what we can and cannot wear. We shouldn’t dress like a man, and we are to be modest. These are His requirements. If you are convicted about wearing only dresses, then great, but it’s not biblical. What about keeping one’s hair long and never cutting it? God never commands that we never cut our hair, and He never gives a specific length. Wear clothing and your hair the way your husband likes it!
I try very hard to stay true to Scripture. Yes, sometimes I give my opinions from experience and what I see happening in our culture today. We are definitely heading towards Sodom and Gomorrah. Even so, please measure everything I teach by the Word of God. Measure everything you hear by the Word of God. Be a Berean and search and know God’s Word. This is the only way to grow in wisdom and discernment. God wants us to be as wise as serpents.
These [the Bereans] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
