It’s Far Easier to Gain Weight Than to Lose It!
About five months ago, I shared on my YouTube that I needed to lose about five pounds. Everyone has a desired weight where they feel best and I was five pounds over it. I had to weigh at a doctor’s office and was shocked at my weight! I determined that I was going to lose those five pounds and discipline myself. It sure hasn’t been easy especially since I am 64 years old and on thyroid medication and a steroid for life due to the damage done to my pituitary from my brain tumor and radiation.
It’s taken five months to get down to my desired weight. There is no secret to losing weight. It consists of learning how much you can eat in a day, weighing every day to keep yourself accountable, learning how much you can eat, and then disciplining yourself to do so. I learned that I can’t eat my homemade granola, pancakes, chocolate, bread, and others things that I was eating on a regular basis. I also had to learn to not put so much salad dressing on my salad. I had gained those five pounds in a few months, and I definitely didn’t want to keep going in that direction.
A nutritionist told me to shoot for losing a half a pound a week. Well, I think it’s a bit harder to do this when you only have five pounds to lose. For those who want to know how I did it, here it is!
I get up every morning and walk 40 minutes. Then I come home and make a protein shake with coconut milk, protein powder, frozen bananas and berries. I began eating this shake when my gut was bad from Covid and was having diarrhea every day. (I still gained five pounds even while having diarrhea every day!) I did have a stool test which showed I had H-pylori (which is common with Covid) and giardia (which is easy to get when you have H-pylori). I went on a three month natural treatment that cured it, thankfully.
For lunch, I eat one slice of my sourdough bread with butter, sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms in ghee then scramble an egg in it. I put this on top of my bread with tomatoes. Sometimes, I will have a corn tortilla sautéed in ghee and melt raw, organic cheese on it then top with tomatoes.
For dinner, I have a big salad with all kinds of vegetables, a protein (steak, sardines, chicken, or turkey), sauerkraut, avocado, sprouted pumpkin seeds, and anything else I feel like putting on it! I used to use my homemade salad dressing but my gut is still healing from the parasites so I just use extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Do I eat anything sweet? Very sparingly and infrequently. I will be going out for a belated birthday lunch with my sisters this week, and I will for sure have a couple of bites of the incredible chocolate dessert the restaurant makes!
The major point of this post is to encourage you, women, to not allow yourself to keep gaining weight. Weigh daily. Don’t be afraid of the truth of the scale! It keeps you accountable. Exercise every day. Eat less. Get rid of too many starches, all seed oils, and refined sugar. Eat healthy fats and proteins that keep you full. I will eat some grapes when I have a sweet tooth. They’ve been incredible lately. I tell my grandchildren that fruit is God’s candy to us!
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
