Motherhood is a Woman’s Highest Calling
Motherhood is a woman’s highest calling. Yes, we are called to glorify the Lord. What does this mean? It means we are to obey the Lord. What does the Lord call women to do? What is their highest purpose in life?
From the beginning, God said it wasn’t good for man to be alone, so He created a help meet (helper suitable) for him (Genesis 2:18). Then, He commanded they be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). The woman’s curse from the Fall was pain in childbirth (Genesis 3:16). In the New Testament, we are told women will be saved in childbirth IF they continue in the faith…(1 Timothy 2:15).
Barrenness is seen as a curse in the Old Testament, and children and fruitfulness as a blessing. All of the barren women grieved deeply and rejoiced when they were with child.
“There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb…” (Proverbs 30:15, 16).
Michal despised her husband, King David, in her heart “therefore Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child unto the day of her death” (2 Samuel 6:23).
“He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD” (Psalm 113:9).
“Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle” (Deuteronomy 7:14).
“None shall miscarry or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days” (Exodus 23:26).
“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” (Psalm 127:3-5)
What is one of the great purposes for marriage? It’s to produce godly offspring (Malachi 2:15).
God commands older women to teach young women to love their husbands and children and to be keepers at home (Titus 2:3-5). He commands younger widows to marry, bear children, and guide the home (1 Timothy 5:14).
Our culture celebrates singleness, barrenness (birth control), careers for women, fornication, and abortion. These are the complete opposite of what God calls women to do. Singleness and barrenness for most Christian woman are an affliction, not a blessing. Few have the gift of celibacy. Most want marriage and children. This is a yearning God put in their hearts. He created women to bear and nurse children. They are reminded of this monthly. They were created with a womb, breasts, ovaries, eggs, and fallopian tubes. Even Deborah, the judge of Israel, was referred to as “the mother of Israel” (Judges 5:7).
Nations fall when women leave their homes, decide not to marry but fornicate instead, and don’t want children. Yes, women, our highest calling is motherhood. We were created to nurture. If you are single or barren, you are still called to nurture. Nurture children in your life, the elderly, neighbors, and young mothers in your churches. This world needs women who nurture. This is what makes cultures stronger, not career women who neglect their husbands, children, and homes IF they even have them. This is your calling, women.
