Just Ban Marriage All Together?
A woman named Angela Dougherty wrote this tweet yesterday: “Just ban marriage all together. It is a legal and social institution which exists to benefit men and control women. It’s archaic and unnecessary. Let everyone be responsible for themselves. Hell of a concept all the way around.” The funny thing is that she thinks she’s being profound and thought these concepts up herself. It’s the same concepts that Marxism and the Black Lives Matter Movement pushes. But these concepts aren’t new. They’re in the Bible.
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry…” (1 Timothy 4:1-3).
Yes, Angela, your idea is a “hell of a concept.” It’s a satanic lie against all that is good and right. God ordained marriage and called it good. He created it to be between one man and one woman. After He created man, He said it was not good for man to be alone so He created a help meet for him. They are to become one flesh and be fruitful and multiply. We are told that marriage reflects Christ and His Church. Marriage is a beautiful, wonderful creation of God Almighty.
What about her accusation that marriage only exists to benefit men and control women? Does this have any merit? No. Actually, marriage greatly benefits women, too! Women were created to need the protection and provision of men. Children (including little women) need a father. When a woman marries a godly, hard-working man, she has someone who will provide for her so she can be at home with the children they have together. It’s God’s perfect formula for a healthy family that few experience these days and many are suffering as a result.
Most men don’t control their wives. Yes, there are always some that do but most do not. It’s actually women who generally want to rule over their husbands (Genesis 3:16), yet God wants the husbands to rule over their wives. Does this mean they are to control their wives? No, it means that they are head over their wives and the wives are to willingly submit to their husbands’ leadership in their marriage and family. It’s God authority structure just as there is an authority structure in every single institution on this earth.
Feminism has caused women to disdain men and masculinity. It has caused them to hate the Lord and His ways. It’s caused women to become more depressed and suicidal than ever before. Feminism doesn’t work. The end result is what we are witnessing now all around us, and it’s tragic.
Women, love the Lord and His ways. Be in His Word daily renewing your mind with Truth. Seek His will out diligently. It’s all written in His Word. His will for us is good no matter how much you hear against Him in our culture. Stand firm in your faith. Give God glory in all that you do. You will reap what you sow.
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Matthew 19:6

This woman’s tweet is not only a “hell of a concept,” but a hellish concept as well. “Let’s everyone be responsible for themselves”? What a lonely world it would be if marriage were banned! She is of her father the devil and needs to be converted to Christ.
“Women were created to need the protection and provision of men.” Amen! Great comment!??
Thanks too for the reminder to read God’s word daily. I’m reading Proverbs right now, as I can never get enough of God’s wisdom. May God bless you, Lori!
If she were the least bit observant she would see the communities with high out of wedlock children rates are suffering.
The hippies tried this in the 60’s, and it failed. God’s ways are perfect and for our benefit. Also, as a side note, look at this horrible verse about marriage from the satanic quran. It’s truly from the devil himself.
“When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the Lord thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.”
Our world is so evil, and becoming more so! But Satan is the prince of the power of the air. We must daily be in the Word of God! Our only source of hope and comfort, and Truth! Jesus’ words in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you Will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” What comforting words! We know that our God is still on the throne!.. it’s a hard time to raise our children in this wicked culture, but it is still what we are called to do. May we receive our instruction and guidance from the Word of God! Thank you Lori, for all you do!
Jill,
The quran? Isn’t that Deuteronomy 21:10-14?
Sounds like this Angela is a bitter divorced woman!
The sad thing about “Angela Dougherty’s” tweet is that many “churches” are in de facto agreement with her. If my (now former) church is any indication of general trends, they now average three memorial services per year, but there hasn’t been a single wedding ceremony performed inside its doors in five years.
I think the Quran adopts the Torah as part of its content
No, that’s the satanic quran. I l’ve heard a lot of “peaceful” muslims try to claim their false god is against slavery and sex slaves. They make excuses for it and say things like, “Well, over here the quran says this.” You are of your father the devil if you think that is in the Bible. God would NEVER say something so evil!
You are correct Trey! I’d hope Christians would recognize God’s Word right away.
I tell my husband all the time, “I like being married. Being married is so much better than being single.”
Granted, he is a godly man who loves the Lord and works hard for us.
Regarding Proverbs, I got a great idea from Dave Ramsey.
31 chapters are about what most months are. I read a chapter every day and start over every month. It’s my daily dose of wisdom!
I love being a woman. Even more, I love being a wife. I had no idea how wonderful a good marriage could be and how it gets better each day. I feel safe, secure, and so loved.
I pity her that she’s never known it.
Jill,
I like your spunk but did you open your Bible and read Deuteronomy 21:10-14?
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (2 Timothy 3:16)
The Old Testament is scripture and will tell you a lot about the Nature of God. The verse you quoted was part of the Mosaic law and something that God approved of.
I so agree with you, Debby! Btw, I hope you saw my apology yesterday. I didn’t mean to offend you.
Unemployment rates are high enough, oh wait till (Biblical) marriage is banned. Just what society needs, more women scrambling for jobs, then showing up in (bbluuck) yoga-pants. Ps. those things are ugly-making enough on slim 20 year-olds.
That’s exactly what I am doing! ?
Jill, look it up. That’s the King James Version of Deuteronomy 21:10-14. Are you a troll? If not, look up the passage and rectify your ignorance of God’s Word. There are things in there hard for us to accept, which shouldn’t be surprising since we are not naturally holy.
What makes you so certain that the “false God” Muslims serve is any different to the God Christians serve? I’ve seen plenty of “Christians” spewing hateful garbage in the name of God and I’ve got Muslim friends who believe very similarly to conservative Christians.
God is so big and so powerful, what makes you so certain that another culture/religion can’t have a different understanding of the Spirit? For an example of this, look to tribal cultures. They have a version of spirituality that, when you actually look into it, is just a very basic understanding of God. They don’t have a Bible to learn from, but they absolutely understand that there is a God and He is in control. Are these people saved? I have no idea. But I personally am very cautious about rubbishing someone else’s beliefs because often, our hearts are the same and it’s just our understanding that is different.
When I was young, all I ever wanted to do was get married and have children. Both my daughters also have this desire. I think it is natural for a woman to want marriage and the love, protection, security and family that comes with that.
Everyone,
I’m quite sure Jill is trolling. This verse is definitely in the Bible but of course it does not mean it necessarily applies any more. Just like we can now eat shellfish and don’t need to cover our heads any more. Unlike the some of the Bible’s other teachings, this was part of the old testament
I also apologize if I sounded snippy.
I love Lori’s posts because they make me think, as do all the comments. I don’t always agree but I like that I think over my reasons for thinking or doing what I do. I’ve changed some things as a result and it has certainly been for the better!
I read my Bible daily. A couple chapters of the Gospel, a chapter of Proverbs, and I’m reading thru Judges right now. No matter how many times I read it, something always stands out to me for the first time. Makes for good dinner conversation!
It’s moments like this when feminists reveal their true nature. When the public eye is on them it’s “we support a woman’s choice to have a career or be a homemaker” but off camera the attitude is “I make the decisions for all women and if I don’t like something then it should be illegal”. This really shows how arrogant and self centred feminists are; to think that just because you don’t find pleasure in something that must mean it benefits no one. Maybe if Angela was taught more patience and womanly skills as a girl she would’ve found a husband and wouldn’t be so bitter.
Hi Lori, A quick word of encouragement. Even if you are like me, married late in life, with no children, my husband and I still create a home where people can feel at home. People living alone come to us and enjoy being with us, which takes the pressure of couples with children. Marriage is great, though it takes commitment and work. I’m not mature enough as a Christian to understand it, but some how married couples create a stable environment. Like an anchor on a ship, even before they have children. By marriage I mean one man and one woman for life. Before anyone chirps in about abused women, most abused wives, when they leave the situation are quite happy to stay unmarried and just join in with another family. I hope you and Ken and your family are keeping will during this pandemic. God bless you.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Christ is the ONLY way to God. Christianity is the only true religion.
Yes, this is natural; these desires are good and right, as they come from God Himself.
Great comment, and I’m glad the Lord gave you the desires of your heart. ??
I am surprised on the number of memorial services. Most people do not have funerals (or memorial services) in churches because of the added cost of moving the body from the funeral home to the church to the grave. I see many couples not having weddings in churches. Many have them outdoors or in barns, or anywhere else. Part of it is cost and ease to have the ceremony and reception at the same place. Many churches do not have very good operating kitchens or people who can perform a good reception as the church ladies used to do. Gone are the days where we did have church ladies who could do a reception for a wedding, a funeral, a church potluck, etc. because many of them are out working and not free to serve not only their family but also their church family.
Banning marriage?
Which definition of marriage?
The State government version of a business contract between the State and the 2 other people?
Or the marriage covenant vow between a man and woman to God for life?
I choose the marriage covenant even if it was to a harlot, PROVIDED SHE HAD TRULY REPENTED OF HER SINS.
Look at Rahab the harlot from the bible.
She is in the linage for Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately I find most women do not want a marriage, they want a business contract with the State.
Before people jump on me about it not being a business contract, PLEASE do your research.
I can show you in court decisions that plainly say that a State marriage license is a business contract between the State and 2 other people. And the State is the primary business partner of that contract.
And another thought – marriage license?
A license is what?
Permission to do something that is otherwise unlawful to do.
So marriage is unlawful to do?
You ask for State permission to marry?
What happens if / when the State says no?
And PLEASE don’t tell me the State will never say no.
Thank you Lori! Please keep on writing the pure truth of God’s glorious Word! So many women have not been brought up to know and understand the beautiful calling on God’s created females lives. The times are dark and discouraging, but we must press on and continue to speak truth in love the way you do. His Word is Truth!!
Yes, tribal people have a very basic understanding of God…
“The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.” (Psalm 97:6)
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)
BUT the Bible is very clear about salvation:
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
There is no excuse for anyone.
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” (Rom. 1:20-21)
“…He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” (Heb. 11:6)
I’m pretty sure you’re trolling here, but I’ll bite just in case I’m wrong.
A memorial service is not a funeral. The former is a special service to pray for and eulogize the deceased, no body present. The latter involves burial. There’s no special effort or logistics involved in a memorial service, and three of them per year for any given church is not unusual, given that church membership, like so may other demographics, is increasingly limited to the elderly.
Church weddings don’t have to –and shouldn’t be– costly, so I doubt that that’s a factor in their increasing rarity. The reality is that 1) fewer and fewer “Christians” are getting married nowadays, yet another reflection of how much like the World most are; and 2) the few that do marry are either unchaste or previously divorced at the time they marry. Most avoid the embarrassment of seeking a church wedding that they know they are not entitled to. Even most converged churchian franchise CEOs still have enough residual shame to not sanction such weddings (although I expect that to change very soon).
Trey,
I am so sorry. I just read the passage. It is in the Bible, not the quran. I think I just overreacted. Perhaps, there is some context where the passage isn’t as bad as I originally thought.
I am offended you think I’m a troll. I was raised an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church, and I’m still a proud one to this day!
If that doesn’t apply to today than what makes you think 1 Timothy 2:12 does?
PS. This is a question not a comeback.
Wow, controls women? I can count on one hand the number of times I have told my wife that she will or will not do something, and every time it was for her benefit, not mine. She enjoys life as a stay at home mom, even as our youngest is now out of high school and getting ready for college. She has time to invest in the food pantry and loves encouraging those in need. Our marriage gives each of us security, knowing that even when we get upset with each other, we will be together. Of course, having Christ in the center of our relationship is what makes our marriage strong.
You’re very right about that, M.
Today’s BLM movement flat out admits it wants to continue destroying the family, and to remove the father from the home. The fact that the out of wedlock rate has gone from 3% in 1947, to 40% today, is a huge part of America’s problem, and the fact the black community, which at one time, believe it or not, a century ago, had a lower out of wedlock rate than the white community, has seen its illegitimacy rate go from 11% in 1941 to 75% today, is the root of nearly every problem in the black community. But, the same white liberals who push sexual dysfunction, are also screeching about race all the time, creasing a smoke screen to hide their diabolical evil.
There are a number of us, unfortunately, who are wives and mothers who will never know what it is to be safe, secure and loved — except only by Christ alone, because we found out after it was too late that the godly Christian man we married was a mask.
Fortunately, there is Christ Who is husband to the widow (in this instance, what is known as a “white widow”), but don’t think for a moment this is easy. It’s not. Some days you don’t know if you can make it one minute longer. My husband is entrenched in pornography. It is so deep because I didn’t recognize it until now. At this point, who knows if he will ever leave it behind. Men who had a pornography problem before marriage may think that marriage will cure it. It doesn’t. The problem has to be addressed. Ladies, if you do learn that he has or had a pornography problem, insist on accountability and help before you marry him.
I didn’t even have a clue. It never remotely occurred to me beforehand. He was so devout and good that such a thought never crossed my mind. I have learned better now. Never, ever marry a man before you discuss this issue with him and also, be sure to let him know you are not going to condemn him; you want to help him. Pornography addictions spread to every aspect of your marriage — your sex life will never really develop, he can develop anger problems and rage over all sorts of things, your children will be affected by the poor marital relationship and they won’t know what a healthy marriage looks like. I cannot begin to describe the disasters in the wake of a pornography addiction.
Not snarky at all, but if you don’t want to be called a troll, maybe be a little more careful in what you post. You literally just called OT scripture ” satanic” and “truly from the devil himself” because you aren’t biblically literate and didn’t take the time to proof text the section.
Do you know WHY God allowed the Israelites to take captive women for wives? Do you know what the common practice of the day was? You cannot read Old Testament scriptures through a 21st century lense. Being familiar with the practices and cultures of the time is vital for a proper biblical understanding.
When a pagan country invaded another, the women were taken as sex slaves. They would be repeatedly raped, brutally tortured, sometimes left to die. Treated like objects to be used and disposed. In Deuteronomy 21:10-14, God is saying that this is NOT the practice for His people called by His name. God’s people are called to a higher standard than that of the world.
If an Israelite saw a captive woman he desired, he was to take her into his house and make her an equal member of his home. Allow her to become a member of the nation of Israel; to “remove her garment of captivity.” He was to take her as a wife. Not as a slave or servant. And not only that, she was to be given an entire month to be left alone to mourn the loss of her people. AND if her husband was displeased, she was to be let go as a free woman without disdain or contempt. THAT sounds like compassion to me. Not at all evil or satanic.
Be careful of what you post or you’ll be shared by your own words.
The problem with cohabitation is there are few protections for women. I knew a gal who’s boyfriend died. She was living in his house. The deceased boyfriend never included her in his will. The ex-wife got possesion of everything. The ex changed the locks on the house. The former girlfriend spent the next several weeks living out of her car.
