It does matter whether Lindsay Clancy killed her children. Her own confession, her husband’s testimony, and so on appear to all confirm that she did.

It doesn’t matter so much whether she was having a psychotic break at the time. Maybe she was out of her head on meds. Maybe she was not fully aware of reality. Maybe it was demonic possession. Maybe she’s just evil. In one sense, it doesn’t matter. We can’t access her state of mind. We can’t tell what she was thinking at the time. But we don’t need to to deliver justice. She killed her children. She deserves to die. We don’t have to become expert mind-readers before we can execute someone for murder. God knows exactly what she deserves, and He will give her perfect justice in the hereafter. It’s our job to send her to that judgment.

See, earthly justice will always be imperfect. We’re not God. We can’t see into hearts. We were never given the task of reading minds or determining a person’s mental state. God commands that murderers be put to death to uphold the value of human life.

It’s not just about Lindsay Clancy herself or about justice for her children. The effect that this case will have on future generations is profound. If we tell women that having mental health problems is an excuse to murder their children, we will get a lot more of it. That’s just the sad fact of the matter. Women with mental health problems will feel entitled to give in to their basest impulses and most disturbing thoughts. Society will have told them that they can’t help it. It’s not their fault. Even women who are not mentally disturbed can fake it. It’s not that hard. There’s no objective test. There’s no blood draw or brain scan that can find it. Doctors go mostly on self-reported feelings and sometimes the testimony of others about recent behavior. We have no objective evidence that there was anything physically or mentally wrong with Lindsay Clancy. We only know what she claimed about her internal mental state. That’s not evidence we can act on. We can act on the evidence that she killed her kids.

Given the disturbing support for Lindsay Clancy that is growing in some sectors of society, and the large number of women saying they have thought of similar things or that it could have been them, if we find her not guilty, we will see more children meet a similar fate. We would be telling more women that they don’t have to control themselves. They can act on their murderous impulses because it’s not their fault. They might even become a sympathetic celebrity if they do. And children will die because of that. The more sympathy we give murderers, the more murderers we will create.
