Mary in “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a perfect example of a godly, submissive wife. When she and George first became attracted to each other, although she liked him since they were children, she never pursued him. She was kind, feminine, and sweet to him. He finally realized that he did love her and want to marry her, but it took some time as he set aside his lofty dreams for a wife and children instead.

Once they were married and off to a wonderfully planned honeymoon, the stock market crashed and her newly wed husband had to get out of the car immediately and take care of business at his bank. Instead of being angry and bitter towards him, she offered to save her husband’s business by giving the townspeople all the money they had saved for the honeymoon, then she snuck off to this old, run-down house and made a romantic honeymoon suite for the two of them.

They bought that old, falling apart home, and she never complained. She made it a place of peace, order, and comfort for George and the children. When he came home angry because Mr. Potter manipulated him into bankruptcy and threated George with jail time, he took it out on the family. Mary comforted her children, yet never said anything negative about their father. She only built him up. She was a peacemaker, not a quarrelsome and contentious wife. She poured love and grace upon him instead, as we should do with our husbands.

He became depressed and suicidal, so he left the home in agony. While he was gone, seeing what life in his town would be like without him, Mary went around to all of her neighbors and friends to let them know what had happened. When George returned, the entire town had showed up to help George by pouring their money and love upon him to pay off his large debt. She was truly a godly help meet to him who only did him good. They sure don’t make movies like this anymore.

 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
