A young woman asked me to write a post about single moms living for God and whether they can be remarried. First of all, it depends on why she is single. Did her husband die? If so, these are God’s instructions to her: “I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully” (1 Timothy 5:14).

Here are her instructions if, for some reason, she left her husband: “And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife” (1 Corinthians 7:10,11). This is probably difficult to read. Let’s say she left him because he was cruel verbally or even physically. These aren’t biblical reasons for divorce, but they may definitely be reasons to separate. Then, while she is separated, she prays diligently for her husband. She keeps eternity in view, and his eternal soul. She doesn’t want him to spend eternity in hell. When she sees him, she is kind to him. She pours grace upon him as Christ pours grace upon her. She may win him to the Lord. There’s nothing more important than this! No, not her happiness or anything else. This life is short. Eternity is forever! And think what an example of long suffering and faithfulness she is being to her children and others.

Here are her instructions if her unbelieving husband has left her: “But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace” (1 Corinthians 7:15). If a husband has left his wife (abandoned her), she is free to remarry. I encourage women to continue trying to win their husbands, even if they’ve been abandoned, until their husbands marry someone else; then they can marry someone else. I think of Connie Hultquist, whose husband was in and out of jail, yet she always had a place setting at the table for him if he returned. He finally did return, and near the end of his life, he repented and believed in Jesus Christ. Now, her husband is spending eternity with Christ! She would say all of those years of praying and waiting were worth it.

What should a single mother do for money? If she doesn’t have family, relatives, or a church that will support her, I encourage her to find a way to make money from home, such as taking in a few children to care for. Her children still need her home! Ask the Lord to make a way for her to be home. With Him, all things are possible, and He tells us His commands are not burdensome.
