A Reminder of Your God-Ordained Role, Women
The role for women spelled out in God’s Word is so terribly maligned these days. Our culture is always trying to undermine it. Even most female “Bible” teachers are participating in doing this by twisting Scripture to mean the opposite of what God intended!
In the beginning, God made man from the dust of the earth. He made the woman from the man’s rib, because the man was alone and needed a help meet. “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). From Creation, the woman was created to be her husband’s help meet.
After the Fall, we are told that Eve’s “desire shall be to they husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16). Due to sin, the woman will desire to control her husband, but the husband is to be in authority over her. Without an authority structure, chaos reigns.
In 1 Corinthians 11:3,7-9, we are given all of these verses about our role in marriage:
“But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”
“For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.”
This is what we learn in Ephesians 5:22-24,33 about our role:
“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body…Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husband in everything…the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
From Colossians 3:18: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husband, as it is fit in the Lord.”
From Titus 2:3,4: “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, OBEDIENT to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
From 1 Peter 3:1,2,5,6
“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear…For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.”
As you can see, women, God clearly spelled out our role in marriage. I counted 17 verses that explains this to us from Genesis all the way to 1 Peter. (If you want to dig into Scripture and find all of God’s commands to women, you can do this in my Biblical Womanhood: A Study Guide.)
May we not be women who rebel against God’s ordained order for us, but learn exactly what He wants from us, then step out in obedience to His will knowing that His Spirit works mightily within us, and we can do ALL things that He has asked us to do through Christ who strengthens us.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.
