Bind Them Continually Upon Thine Heart

Bind Them Continually Upon Thine Heart

We, as parents, are commanded to bring our children up “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). In Deuteronomy 6, we are told to do this with the Word of God concerning our children: “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Hiding God’s Word deeply into your children’s heart is the single, most important thing you will do for your children. “My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life. To keep you from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the adulteress” (Proverbs 6:20-24).

If there has ever been a time to hide God’s Word in your children’s heart, the time is now. You especially want to keep your sons away from pornography, the women who will throw themselves at them, and premarital sex in this oversexualized culture we are presently living in.

I love how Proverbs 22:6 tells us the when our children walk with the Word planted in their hearts, it will guide them. When they sleep, it will watch over them and when they are awake, it will talk to them; teaching, rebuking, correcting, and changing them! The Word talks to them! I love this. It will permeate all of their lives, even when they are asleep.

Never neglect teaching the Word to your children. Read it to them every day. Have them write verses on index cards and memorize them. Buy plaques with verses on them and hang them around your home. If they struggle with anger, have them memorize verses on anger. If they struggle with selfishness, have them memorize verses on this. Bless your children’s childhood by filling it up with God’s Word. One women shared this site with me and told me it has helped her memorize so much Scripture.

My children were all home for Christmas and two of them have babies. One couple told me that every night when they put their little baby in her bed, they both sing a hymn over her. What a beautiful way to begin teaching their child the love of an Almighty God who is worthy of all of our praise!

  1. Lori,

Because the Word of God has grown so precious to me, I thought this was truly a most lovely post. Such wise words are worthy to teach younger women today.

  2. Thank you, Kelley. That verses just popped out at me and it helped me to clearly see why we must hide God’s Word deeply into our children’s lives. It will benefit them for life!
